Movement

The total movement of a ship is the cumulation of 3 propulsions: mechanical, sails and oars as affected by current and wind. A ship resolves movement in the following order:

  1. inertia
  2. wind and sails
  3. current and oars
  4. mechanical

Movement is divided into 2 legs. Resolve all movement for the first leg and then resolve movement for the second leg.

Inertia
Before any movement the ship place a blue counter at the stern (rear) of the vessel. After all movement is complete, the distance from the stern (rear) of the ship to the counter is the total movement of the ship for that turn.

This is important because all ships must begin each term with a mandatory movement caused by inertia. Inertia (as defined by the game) is a straight-ahead movement equal to one third the vessel’s last total movement. On the first term of the game, it is assumed that inertia has already been adjudicated upon placement.
