Attacking in Multiple Ranks

Units in closed formation with long ("L") or extra-long ("XL") polearms may choose to attack in multiple ranks.

• Units with "L" weapons may attack in up to 2 ranks.
• Units with "XL" weapons may attack in up to 3 ranks.

Before any attacks are rolled, the controlling player must declare how many ranks are attacking.  If more than one rank is attacking, C.E.R. is increased by +2 per rank.  The C.E.R. penalty applies to all attacking models in the unit, including the first rank. Thus, all attacks from a unit attacking with two ranks are at +4 C.E.R., while all attacks from a unit attacking with three ranks will be at +6 C.E.R.

The ability of units with L and XL polearms to attack in multiple ranks is lost as soon as they are engaged on more than one side.
