Barbarians

The more civilized races of Lharna describe the barbarians as savages, little more than animals. They misunderstand. The tribes of barbarians that roam the feral lands foster mighty heroes. They run and hunt across the steppes, free to do what they please. Some take to the seas, raiding up and down the coast like their Terran ancestors. Their only universal traits are their boundless courage and their respect for the Ti-Qorem. The sweltering heat rose from the holy spot where barbarians believe the god of fire resides.

When the tribes are roused to battle, civilized men feel fear gnawing at their hearts. The rage of the berserkers is an elemental force as unstoppable as the tornado. Bloodied axes rise and fall amongst the ranks of knights, wielded by enormous men who howl and ignore blows that would kill lesser warriors. Where the barbarian armies pass only ruins and the corpses of their enemies are left behind.

The tribes take care of their own. There are no beggars among the barbarians. In times of need, family and friends rally to each other, and entire tribes will fight for the honor of a single member, however lowly. A tribesman does not starve for lack of money. While life among the tribes doesn’t offer the opulence available to civilized nobility in the decadent cities of other men, each tribesman’s opinions and abilities are important. There is always time for pleasure, even for a people who spend most of their lives hunting for food. In the evenings, they often gather around their hearth fires and sing of their ancestors, telling tales of the heroes of yesterday. Today’s deeds may someday grace the hearth fires of tomorrow. So it has been, and so it will always be. (For a new barbarian hero, check out Ketil Wartooth on this site.) barbarians2.jpg (9692 bytes)
